Some symptoms need care within minutes, not days. Go to the nearest emergency facility, or call your local emergency service, for:

  • Chest pain or heavy pressure in the chest, especially with sweating or breathlessness
  • Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, drooping of one side of the face, or trouble speaking
  • Difficulty breathing, or breathing that is very fast and noisy
  • Fits (convulsions), or someone who cannot be woken
  • Heavy bleeding that does not stop with pressure
  • A stiff neck with fever and severe headache
  • Severe abdominal pain, especially in pregnancy
  • Any baby under two months with fever, poor feeding or unusual sleepiness

While waiting for help, keep the person calm, loosen tight clothing, and do not give food or drink to someone who is drowsy or having fits.
